Kharif Season Preparation: How Farmers Can Prepare Land Before Rain

One of the most important seasons for farming in India is the Kharif season, also known as the monsoon season, mainly around the months of June and July, and mostly crops heavily depend on summer rains. During this season farmers prepare their lands to plant seeds that require a lot of water. In the Kharif season, farmers grow crops like cotton, rice, maize, soybeans, and pulses. Before rain, the good preparation of the soil is very important because it is helpful for the farmers to get a better crop harvest and reduce the problem during their growing period. 

The initial preparation for the Kharif season is the cleaning of the field. Farmers remove the weeds, unwanted plants, and stones. It helps in preparing the clean base for new crops and also reduces diseases. If the farmers do not remove the unwanted plants early, they will grow more quickly in the rainy season. By this process the rainwater will go deep into the soil, which is better for crop growth. Farmers can use modern machines like power weeders or tillers to prepare the soil more effectively. If the farmer does a good job tilling the soil, the roots grow stronger or healthier. 

Another important preparation part is leveling the field because in uneven land, the water gets collected in some areas while the other areas remain dry. By proper leveling of the field, the farmers ensure that in the rainy season the water gets distributed equally because it is important for the crops; they need proper water to grow. Before the Kharif season, farmers focus on improving the soil fertility because it gives healthy soil that supports better growth of plants and improves crop quality. 

One more crucial step is making proper drainage on the field, due to heavy rain in the rainy season causing waterlogging that can damage the crops due to excess water. Farmers make small drains in the fields that allow the extra water to flow out easily. A good drainage system protects the soil condition and the crops from damage. Before the Kharif season, seed selection is also very important; farmers should choose high-quality and disease-tolerant seeds. Good seeds increase the chance of better budding and are also helpful for seeds before seeding to protect them from pests & diseases.
